(Writers Note: This will be the first part of two articles. This one for the announcement, the next one will be my reaction to the announcement, such as what we can be sure of, what we can speculate and what we need to be asking.)
This morning it was announced that a new Star Trek series will premiere on CBS! Then after that first episode premieres there, every subsequent episode will air exclusively on CBS All Access.
Alex Kurtzman will serve as an Executive Producer for the series. He co-wrote and produced Star Trek (2009) and co-wrote Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013). Another Executive Producer, Heather Kadin does not have the Star Trek cred Kurtzman does, but has executive produced a total of 4 shows, all of which this writer throughly enjoys, Scorpion, Matador, Sleepy Hollow and Limitless. Kurtzman is also an Executive Producer on Scorpion and Limitless, so they already know how to work together.
Not much else is known about the show. CBS of course sent out a HUGE press packet telling us the virtues of CBS All Access and why now is the time for a new Star Trek show, but if you really want the TL;DR? They are desperate to get their paid streaming service off the ground and they are hoping this will do it. Interesting note though, they do currently have every single episode of all the various Star Trek series ready to stream with no commercials. Here’s the thing though, so does Netflix, and I am already paying for that, as are most of us.. We will see then I guess!
So what do you think? Is this a desperation move on CBS’s part? Do you think you will consider paying 6 dollars a month for all things Star Trek? Let us know below in the comments!
